Valentine's Day is few days to go and the online sites are with gift ideas, gift coupons and travelling offers for lovebirds. Though all these offers seem pretty attractive to the couples, in reality they may be prove harmful too. Cyber criminals are out there to send malicious spam advertisements, promotions and offers on the occasion of Valentine's Day.
As cautioned by Trend Micro’s managing director, India & SEA Dhanya Thakkar, the security firm has detected 117 unique sender IPs, all of which are related to spam. Most of the spammed emails have been tracked to the U.S., India, Ukraine, Canada and the Netherlands. These spam emails have been sent in different languages like German and Chinese. These spam emails are offering gifts on dating sites and so on. Valentine's Day has always been a favorite occasion among hackers to target potential victims.
Sometimes users are tricked to spam ads through social media posts, malicious email attachments etc. A variety of spam emails have been found by Trend Micro researchers which use the 'Valentine's Day' word as a keyword. These Valentine's Day-themed emails don't redirect users to original sites but they are always led to scams and spam advertisements. Thus the researchers have advised users to stay more cautious on this Valentine's Day while opening email attachments from unknown sources, clicking on suspicious links and visiting unpopular websites.
Another security firm, Wegilant, has also alerted users regarding in-app purchases and clicking on links from Android apps. Android is said to be the most vulnerable operating system. A cloud-based Android app security scanner from Wegilant, Appvigil, helps users identify whether an Android app is hack-able or not.
